Was Enoch Sinless?
The subject of living a sinless life while waiting for Christ's return divides many Christians today. A vast number of Christians don't believe that we can live a life without sin by divine power. Our former church, the SDA Church does not believe that we can live a sinless life in this life even by God's divine power empowering us to live this Christlike life.
The SDA Church believes in the writings of Ellen G. White. And we believe in her writings too. Yet we differ from the SDA Church because we believe what Mrs. White teaches that we can be sinless through God's divine power. In this presentation, we will find out from Ellen G. White if Enoch lived a sinless life before his translation to heaven or not?
1. How long did Enoch walk with God?
Genesis 5:22 says, "And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:"
Enoch walked with God for over 300 years after his first born at 65 years of his age. He lived 365 years.
2. What happened to Enoch after he walked with God for 300 years?Genesis 5:23 - And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: (24) And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
God translated Enoch after he was 365 years of age. Enoch never tasted death.
3. Why did God translate Enoch? What did Spirit of Prophecy say?
“For his faithful obedience to God he was translated. So, also, the faithful, who are alive and remain, will be translated.” Testimonies to the church, Vol.2, p.121
TWO POINTS:
(i) Because of Enoch's faithful obedience, he was translated in year 987 after creation before the flood took place in 1,656 .
(ii) As our example, the faithful obedient will be translated at Jesus Christ's second coming - Revelation 22:14. The faithful obedience who died in Christ will be resurrected in the first resurrection to be taken to heaven.
4. Did Ellen G. White say that Enoch was sinless in life?
“During these earlier years Enoch had loved and feared God and had kept His commandments. He was one of the holy line, the preservers of the true faith, …” Patriarchs & Prophets, p.84.
If Enoch kept God's Commandments, therefore, he was sinless, holy, blameless, undefiled and perfect since sin is the breaking of God's law (1 John 3:4); and he is not breaking the law of God.5. Is there another statement by Ellen G. White to say that Enoch was sinless?
“The godly character of this prophet represents the state of holiness which must be attained by those who shall be “redeemed from the earth” (Revelation 14:3) at the time of Christ’s second advent.” Patriarchs & Prophets, pp.88 -89.
Enoch was sinless because he kept God's law. Please take note that the character of those to be redeemed from the earth at the time of Christ's second coming is going to be the same as Enoch's.
6. What was the prevailing false teaching of Enoch's Time regarding the law of God?
Satan himself kept telling us that the law of God cannot be perfectly kept and that we cannot live a life without sin. He is telling us also that we will be living in sin since we cannot live sinless. He is a liar from the beginning - John 8:44. If we are telling the same thing as Satan, then, we are the agents of the devil in our churches. Therefore, we are preaching another false gospel that Paul says in the book of Galatians.
7. Did Enoch teach the people at his time that the law of God can be kept, and a sinless life is possible?Ellen G. White says, “Men were taught that it is possible to obey the law of God; that even while living in the midst of the sinful and corrupt, they were able, by the grace of God, to resist temptation, and become pure and holy.” Patriarchs and Prophets, p.88
Enoch not only lived a sinless life but he was a faithful teacher of righteousness by faith. He lived about 600 years before the flood. He is our example of living a life without sin.
Enoch did not make a claim that he is sinless. God said, Enoch walked with HIm over 300 years. It was God who declared Enoch sinless, and He translated him to heaven. Enoch's translation is a rebuke upon those who do not believe that we can live a life without sin by divine grace. By translating Enoch to heaven, God also demonstrated that the sinner will not be taken to heaven. NO one will be saved in sin. Whoever is saved, will be saved from sin.
