WHY JESUS CHRIST HAD TO TAKE UP A FALLEN SINFUL NATURE IN HIS INCARNATION?

This topic is very crucial for our understanding because it is the very root of the gospel. Our understanding of this topic will lead us to a better understanding of the plan of salvation. It is also connected to our salvation since Jesus Christ will become our example in life as to how to live without sin

We know that Adam and Eve before they sinned, they did not need a Savior. Without the fall, they did not need Jesus Christ to come down as a human being to be a substitute for their sin. ONLY after their fall that Jesus Christ had to come as a human being.

Point: ONLY when Adam and Eve sinned and had a fallen sinful nature that Jesus Christ was to come. If Jesus Christ was to come in an unfallen sinful nature; Would that make Him 100% human like us or less than 100 % from being human like us?

So what human nature should Jesus Christ come to be Adam and Eve's Savior from their sins? What kind of a human being should Jesus Christ become in His incarnation if He was to be 100% human?

What human nature should Jesus Christ become so that He can be a true example in life where humanity can look up to Him as their role model in Morality?

First, we need to understand the accusation made by the devil against God. Once this is understood, it will help us in our understanding as to why Jesus Christ had to take up a fallen sinful nature in HIs incarnation.

1. After Adam and Eve sinned - What was the claim made by the devil according to Spirit of Prophecy?

Mrs. White says, “Satan, the fallen angel, had declared that no man could keep the law of God after the disobedience of Adam. …Jesus resisted the temptations of Satan in the same manner that every tempted soul may resist, by referring him to the inspired record and saying, “It is written.” Ellen G White, Selected Messages, Book 3, page, 136; [Manuscript 1, 1892.]

Point:

(i) After Adam and Eve sinned, Satan had declared that no man could keep the law of God.

(ii) Jesus Christ lived and resisted the temptations of Satan in the same manner that every tempted soul may resist.

If we were to resist temptations in the same manner as Jesus Christ did, then it would only be justified if He came with the fallen sinful nature just like us, correct? .............................

Since after the fall, Adam and Eve had a fallen sinful nature. In order for Jesus Christ to prove the devil's claim incorrect, He needs to come in a fallen sinful nature like man to prove that man in his fallen sinful nature can keep the law of God,

Had Jesus Christ come in a sinless nature in His humanity and kept the law perfectly, He still cannot prove the devil's claim incorrect because man had a fallen sinful nature which was different to His. Jesus Christ would have had an advantage over mankind because of His unfallen sinless nature, hence, that would cause man to give an excuse for sin.

2. Did Mankind make the same claim as the devil that man could not keep the law of God in this fallen sinful nature?

Mrs. White says, “Since the fall of Adam, men in every age have excused themselves for sinning, charging God with their sin, saying that they could not keep His commandments. This is the insinuation Satan cast at God in heaven.”

3. After Adam and Eve sinned; Did Jesus Christ tell the angels in heaven what human nature He would take up in His incarnation?

Yes! Mrs. White says, “Jesus also told them (angels) that they would have a part to act, to be with Him and at different times strengthen Him; that He would take man’s fallen nature, and His strength would not be even equal with theirs …” Story of Redemption, p.44

4. Did the devil know what human nature Jesus Christ would take up in His incarnation?

Yes! Mrs. White says, “He (Satan) told his angels that whenJesus should take fallen man’s nature, he could over power Him and hinder the accomplishment of the plan of salvation.” Story of Redemption, p.45

5. If Jesus Christ took up a sinless nature in His incarnation to humanity; Would He be able to die on the CROSS?

No! He would be immortal and not be able to die on the CROSS. In order for Jesus Christ to be able to die on the CROSS, He had to be MORTAL. Jesus Christ had to take up the fallen sinful nature of man to be able to become mortal.

Mrs. White says, “While as a member of the human family He was mortal, as God He was the fountain of life for the world.” Desire of Ages, p.484.

We know His divinity never died at Calvary. Mrs. White says, “When Christ was crucified, It was His human nature that died. Deity did not sink and die; that would have been impossible.” Letter 280, 1904.

Conclusion:

(i) In order to prove the devil wrong in his claim that man could not keept the law of God, Jesus Christ had to come in the same nature as mankind.

(ii) In order for Jesus Christ to prove that man can keep the law of God, He had to become a human being with the same human nature as mankind.

(iii) In order for Jesus Christ to become our example in living a righteous life, He had to become a human being with the same human nature as mankind to justify His claim.

(iv) In order for Jesus Christ to become our substitue for sin by dying for our sins, He had to become mortal and took up the same human nature as mankind.

Jesus Christ when He took up a fallen sinful nature, that did not automatically make Him a sinner. Sin is the transgression of the law. Therefore, Jesus Christ was born with a fallen sinful nature and lived a life without sin. This makes the gospel story more powerful since Jesus Christ came just like you and I in our fallen sinful nature and understood how we would go through in our struggles against temptations. He knows how to help us from all temptations because He became one like us.

Hebrews 2:18 - For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
